Southers highlighted the difficulties in maintaining staff when foot traffic dwindles as consumers struggle to purchase essential items. “I can’t afford to pay people just to stand here when you have just a few people shopping,” he explained. As food insecurity rises, Southers has taken the unusual step of hiring security personnel to address threats of looting and increased shoplifting. “We have security guards now when we didn’t have to before, because we’ve had threats of possible looting,” he noted.
