UPDATE: A mother of two, Patricia Villa, was tragically shot and killed while working at a storage facility in Covina, California on November 2, 2023. The accused gunman, identified as Juan Nava, has been taken into police custody after reportedly entering the facility shortly before closing time.
The shocking incident unfolded around 5 p.m. when a masked man entered the storage facility, armed and prepared for violence. Security footage captures him parking his vehicle, donning a mask, and brandishing a weapon before confronting Patricia. Family members grew worried when they could not reach her, leading them to the facility where they discovered her critically injured. Patricia had been shot five times.
Hundreds of friends, family, and coworkers gathered for an emotional vigil this past Saturday, mourning the loss of a woman described as a dedicated mother and positive influence. “Patricia was a non-violent person… why did this have to happen to her?” asked her father, Frank Villa. Friends emphasized Patricia’s dedication as an employee and the light she brought into their lives. “She was an awesome coworker and knowledgeable manager,” added Deann Pancheri.
Authorities report that Nava, 66, was a customer at the facility who appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis. Following the incident, police utilized facial recognition technology to identify and apprehend him. A search of his residence uncovered multiple firearms, including automatic weapons and pistols, raising concerns about his mental state.
In response to this tragic event, a GoFundMe page has been established to support Patricia’s family during this incredibly difficult time. “I don’t know how anybody could, you know, even plan for something like this,” said Pancheri, highlighting the random nature of the violence.
Nava remains in custody with no bail set. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 9, 2023. As the community continues to process this senseless act, the focus remains on honoring Patricia’s memory and providing for her family in their time of need.
