UPDATE: A tragic car crash in East Oakland has claimed the life of a 15-year-old girl and left three other juvenile girls hospitalized. The incident unfolded on July 15, 2023, around 9:40 a.m., when a 16-year-old male driver was arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter and hit and run.
Authorities report that the accident occurred near the intersection of 14th Avenue and East 31st Street. The Toyota Corolla, carrying five juveniles, collided with another vehicle. After the crash, the male driver fled the scene, merging onto Interstate 580, while the driver of the struck vehicle pursued him, alerting police with crucial details.
The situation escalated when the suspect exited the freeway at 35th Avenue and sped southbound. Tragically, at the 3300 block of 35th Avenue, the Corolla was struck again by a third vehicle, causing it to crash into a concrete wall.
Emergency responders rushed all occupants from the Corolla to local hospitals. Unfortunately, the 15-year-old girl, seated in the rear, succumbed to her injuries less than an hour later. The conditions of the other three girls remain unclear as of Sunday morning. The male driver was taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition before being placed under arrest.
