Rocky Mount Man Arrested for Attempted Murder After Girlfriend Shot

UPDATE: A Rocky Mount man, identified as Hayward Mann, has been arrested for attempted murder after allegedly shooting his girlfriend on October 21, 2023. The incident took place in a home on Speights Chapel Road, just northeast of Whitakers, NC.

Authorities report that Mann, 49, shot the victim at least twice during a dispute. The Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a gunman before a second call confirmed a woman at the scene had been shot. Upon arrival, deputies found the injured woman suffering from “multiple apparent gunshot wounds.”

Emergency responders provided immediate assistance until Edgecombe County EMS transported her to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville. Details regarding her current condition remain unconfirmed.

Detectives launched an investigation and quickly learned that Mann had fled the scene. However, law enforcement located him shortly afterward and took him into custody without further incident. Deputies recovered a firearm in his possession at the time of his arrest.

Mann has been charged with felony attempted first-degree murder and is being held without bond at the Edgecombe County Detention Center. He is scheduled to appear in district court on October 25, 2023, in Tarboro, according to court records.
