Lafayette Mourns Loss of City Leader Fritz Sprague, 56

UPDATE: Lafayette is grieving the loss of former city administrator Fritz Sprague, who passed away in October after a courageous 3.5-year battle with glioblastoma, a malignant brain tumor. Sprague, remembered for his fearless and compassionate leadership, was instrumental in guiding the city through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and a crippling cyberattack.

During his tenure from 2019 to May 2023, Sprague became a beloved figure in the community, known for his sharp attire and infectious laughter. His husband, Scott Black, reflected on Sprague’s commitment to public service, stating, “His dedication and passion for public service started early.” Sprague’s legacy includes avoiding city layoffs during the pandemic and implementing local disaster declarations to facilitate assistance after the cyberattack.

Sprague also championed local nonprofits, such as Sister Carmen, and led significant developments, including the Medtronic campus relocation to Lafayette. His ability to connect with people and inspire them was evident in his leadership style. Current city administrator Kady Doelling, who worked under Sprague, noted, “He was really good at finding out peoples’ strengths and putting them in roles that were unconventional.”

In a heartfelt tribute, Heather Balser, Louisville’s city manager, shared memories of their friendship, highlighting their drive-thru meetings during the pandemic. “He always had wonderful things to say, he was the sharpest dresser, he was a big laugher,” Balser recalled.

Born in 1967 in Spokane, Washington, Sprague earned degrees in political science and public administration from Eastern Washington University. His dedication to continuous self-improvement was evident throughout his career, which spanned over 30 years across Colorado, Michigan, and Florida.

A Celebration of Life is set for December 17, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Gatehouse within the Lionsgate Event Center in Lafayette. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for local nonprofits that align with Sprague’s community values, including SPAN and Rocky Mountain Equality.

Lafayette residents and officials alike are reflecting on Sprague’s impact, as he raised the bar for city performance and inspired many through his innovative and compassionate approach. As the city mourns, the legacy of Fritz Sprague will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those he served.
