Rick George, the athletic director who played a pivotal role in hiring Deion Sanders as head coach for the University of Colorado, has announced his departure from the position at the end of this year. The university revealed on Thursday that George will transition into a special adviser role for the chancellor, marking the end of a significant chapter in Colorado athletics.
Since taking on the role in 2013, George became the sixth full-time athletic director for the university. His tenure included a number of coaching changes for the football team, beginning with Mike MacIntyre, followed by Mel Tucker, Karl Dorrell, and ultimately Deion Sanders in 2021. George’s influence was instrumental in recruiting Sanders from Jackson State, where his leadership had garnered national attention.
Under George’s leadership, the Buffaloes experienced a notable resurgence. In 2023, the team finished with a record of 4-8, but the following year saw a significant turnaround, ending with a 9-4 record. This success led to Sanders receiving a contract extension, securing a five-year deal valued at $54 million that runs through 2029.
Despite the promising trajectory, the current season has presented challenges. The team is struggling with a 3-7 record, particularly after the departures of key players, including Travis Hunter and former quarterback Shedeur Sanders. The Buffaloes have faced difficulties, and the coaching staff is under pressure to reverse the team’s fortunes.
