STALKER 2 Celebrates One Year with PS5 Launch and Updates

One year after its initial launch on March 15, 2023, STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is set to make its debut on PlayStation 5, following the expiration of a timed exclusivity deal with Microsoft for Xbox Series S and X. Developed by GSC Game World, the game emerged from a challenging development cycle marked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This anniversary not only highlights the game’s journey but also its ongoing evolution through significant updates.

In a review, the game received an 8 out of 10 rating, praised for its ambitious features while acknowledging the need for further refinements. Over the past year, GSC Game World has implemented major updates, the latest of which went live this week, enhancing the A-Life system and introducing new difficulty modes.

Reflections on Success and Updates

In an exclusive Q&A, Zakhar Bocharov, Communications Director at GSC Game World, expressed satisfaction with the game’s performance, noting that it sold one million copies within the first three days and attracted several million players via Game Pass on PC and Xbox. Bocharov stated, “These figures can undoubtedly be considered successful.”

The developer released seven major updates and numerous smaller ones, significantly changing the game from its original launch version. Bocharov commented on the continuous improvement process, saying, “In the world of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., updates could probably go on forever, much like the pursuit of perfection.”

New Features and Enhancements for PS5

The launch on PlayStation 5 brings new features, including gyro aiming through the controller’s motion sensor. Ievgen Kulyk, Technical Director, mentioned that this addition will enhance player comfort. Players can choose their preferred control method, whether using gamepads on PC or a keyboard and mouse on consoles.

Regarding the DualSense features, Bocharov highlighted the immersive aspects of the controller, noting that “all DualSense and PS5 features work to multiply immersion in an immersive game.” The team is aiming for optimal performance on the PS5, with specific targets set for graphics: base PS5 performance of 2K at 60 FPS and quality settings of 4K at 30 FPS. For the PS5 Pro, performance targets are 4K at 60 FPS and quality set at 4K at 30 FPS.

When addressing comparisons to PC settings, Bocharov explained that console optimization is complex and may not align perfectly with PC high settings, but the PS5 Pro version is leaning towards those benchmarks.

Updates on future features, including a planned upgrade to a newer version of Unreal Engine 5, were also discussed. Bocharov indicated that this major upgrade would bring significant optimization improvements, although exact timelines remain uncertain. “We will keep you updated on the timing of this update through our socials,” he added.

The roadmap for STALKER 2 also includes new missions, which Bocharov teased may contain spoilers. While the multiplayer mode remains under development, Bocharov had no further updates to share at this time, stating that information will be provided as it becomes available.

Additionally, the first of the planned DLCs for STALKER 2 is expected to release next year, affirming the developer’s commitment to expanding the game’s universe.

As the game transitions to the PlayStation 5, fans can anticipate a richer experience filled with new content and enhancements, marking a significant milestone for both the developers and players alike.
