Covington’s Community Dinner Seeks New Home After 25 Years

The Saturday Night Community Dinner in Covington, Kentucky, is facing an uncertain future as it seeks a new venue after nearly 25 years of providing essential services to the community. The dinner, which has been held at First Christian Church, is set to lose its location at the end of this year due to the church’s decision to sell its building. Organizers are rallying support from the community to secure a permanent site to continue this vital service.

Urgent Need for a New Venue

Founded in partnership with several local congregations and volunteers, the Saturday Night Community Dinner has become a lifeline for many residents. Every Saturday at 17:30, those in need gather for a hot meal and a safe space, fostering a sense of dignity and community. Over the years, the dinner has served as a crucial resource for individuals facing challenges such as homelessness, mental illness, and food insecurity. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the dinner regularly welcomed 100 to 120 diners each week; that number has since decreased to 50 to 60.

According to organizers, this decline is a reflection of broader societal issues that have intensified. “Our guests are seen as God’s beloved—fully human and worthy of care, respect, and compassion,” they stated. “This ministry won’t stop until the day every person in Covington has enough. Until then, we keep showing up.”

Seeking Community Support and Participation

As the search for a new location continues, the partner churches involved in the initiative are emphasizing the need for a space that includes a certified kitchen and seating for 60 to 80 people. Accessibility is also a priority, with a focus on locations along or near the Madison Avenue corridor, which is easily accessible by public transport. Additionally, features such as ADA compliance and climate control are strongly preferred.

The current partners in this endeavor include:

  • Bulletsville Christian Church (DOC)
  • Trinity Episcopal Church
  • Crescent Springs Presbyterian
  • Lakeside Presbyterian
  • First Christian Church, Covington (DOC)
  • Milford Christian Church
  • Erlanger Christian Church (DOC)

Organizers welcome more partners to join this initiative, highlighting that participation is not limited to religious organizations. Community members are encouraged to contribute in whatever capacity they can, whether through volunteering or helping to identify suitable venues.

Those who have leads on potential locations or wish to participate in the volunteer rotation are urged to contact Sheri at First Christian Church via phone at 859-431-3904 or by email at [email protected].

The community’s support is crucial to ensure the continuation of this important service. As Covington’s residents strive for stability, the Saturday Night Community Dinner remains committed to providing not just meals, but a welcoming and supportive environment for all who walk through its doors.
