Poquoson Dominates Southampton 42-6 in Semifinal Clash

UPDATE: Poquoson has just clinched a decisive victory over Southampton, winning 42-6 in the Class 2 Region A semifinals on July 15, 2023, at Poquoson Middle School. The Islanders’ powerful rushing game dominated, amassing an impressive 429 yards without attempting a single pass.

This commanding win propels Poquoson (11-1) into a highly anticipated showdown against top-seeded Armstrong (12-0), who edged out Thomas Jefferson in the other semifinal. The Islanders are vying for their fourth consecutive regional title, creating palpable excitement among fans.

Southampton (7-5) entered the game with high hopes, leveraging their star quarterback, Zayden Pope, who has thrown for 2,013 yards and 19 touchdowns this season. Early in the game, Pope connected on five passes for 40 yards, bringing the Indians to the Poquoson 15-yard line, hinting at a competitive matchup. However, the Islanders’ defense held strong, taking over on downs and unleashing their potent ground attack.

Austin Conley set the tone early, sprinting for a 39-yard touchdown on Poquoson’s first possession, making it 7-0. Following a crucial interception by Dom Galacgac, the Islanders capitalized with a steady eight-play drive, culminating in a 4-yard touchdown run by Cody Little, extending their lead to 14-0.

The Islanders’ defense continued to shine, limiting Southampton to just 150 total yards—with only 126 yards through the air. They recovered a fumble at the Southampton 19-yard line, leading to another quick score by Galacgac, who dashed in from 19 yards out to push the lead to 21-0.

Despite Southampton’s efforts, including a creative 35-yard touchdown pass from Miguel Bradshaw to Qmarai Allen, the Islanders responded swiftly. A penalty on Southampton allowed Poquoson to regain momentum, resulting in a 21-yard touchdown run by Galacgac, bringing the score to 28-6 just before halftime.

As the second half commenced, Conley showcased his speed with a remarkable 62-yard touchdown run, followed by another score just moments later, giving Poquoson a commanding 36-point lead. With the clock running, the Islanders solidified their dominance.

Coach Elliott Duty praised his team’s performance, emphasizing the effective blocking that created opportunities. “We did a good job blocking tonight, everybody,” he stated. “To limit a team like that to one big play, I think we did OK.”

Looking ahead, Poquoson will face Armstrong in a clash that promises to be thrilling, as both teams strive for regional supremacy. Fans and players alike are gearing up for what could be a historic matchup.
