CU Buffs Soccer Advances to Sweet 16 with Dominant Victory

UPDATE: The Colorado Buffaloes women’s soccer team has secured a spot in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament following a commanding 3-0 victory over Xavier on Thursday. This marks only the third time in program history that the Buffs have reached this stage, and their first since 2013.

In a stunning display, junior Hope Leyba capped the win with a spectacular 40-yard goal in the dying moments, leading her team to victory and showcasing their dominance on the pitch. The Buffs controlled the match throughout, leading 2-0 before Leyba’s exclamation point in the 87th minute.

Coach Danny Sanchez expressed his admiration for Leyba’s talent, stating, “That third goal from Hope, what class. Really took the heat and the pressure off us.” The Buffs will face a challenging matchup against the second-seeded Michigan State Spartans on Sunday.

Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. MT at DeMartin Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan. CU’s journey to this point has been remarkable, with a current season record of 17-3-3. They have a chance to secure their first Elite Eight berth, a feat they haven’t achieved since 1999.

The season has come full circle for the Buffs, who previously played Michigan State to a 1-1 draw back on August 14. Leyba, who netted the first goal in that match, has since set a team record with 22 goals this season, emphasizing her significant role in the team’s success.

Despite a challenging history in NCAA Tournament road games, the Buffs are optimistic heading into this critical matchup. The team has only won 2 of their 12 true road games in the tournament, but their recent performances suggest a potential shift in fortune.

“It’s not about us. It’s about our seniors and their opportunity to advance,” Sanchez emphasized. The stakes are high as the Buffs aim to make history and move closer to the championship.

As the game approaches, excitement builds among fans and players alike, underscoring the emotional weight of this moment for the team. The Buffaloes are ready to face the Spartans, who have their own strong lineup, including top scorer Kennedy Bell.
