Fremont Man Charged with Murder of Sex Offender Returns to Court

UPDATE: A Fremont man, Varun Suresh, has been charged with the murder of a registered sex offender, David Brimmer, and is set to return to court on December 17, 2023. Suresh’s defense is seeking additional time to address his alleged mental health issues, raising urgent questions about his state of mind during the fatal incident.

The shocking murder occurred in a neighborhood near the Fremont Hills, where Suresh, 29, reportedly used the Megan’s Law website to target Brimmer, 71, who had a history of sexual offenses involving children. Authorities confirm that Suresh meticulously planned the attack, posing as a door-to-door accountant to lure Brimmer into a vulnerable position at his home.

According to court documents, after confronting Brimmer with a knife, Suresh chased him into a nearby residence, where he subsequently inflicted multiple stab wounds. Witnesses describe the chaotic scene in the kitchen, culminating with Suresh fatally stabbing Brimmer in the front yard. Following the attack, Suresh calmly smoked a cigarette before surrendering to the police, reportedly confessing to his premeditated scheme against “child molesters” and “sex offenders.”

In a chilling statement to investigators, Suresh revealed his intentions: “I chose [Brimmer] because he wanted someone who is easy to kill… I honestly don’t like pedophiles. They deserve to die.” This disturbing admission comes amidst rising concerns over vigilantism and targeted violence.

The incident, initially reported as a neighborhood fight, marks Fremont‘s fifth homicide of the year, prompting community outrage and discussions about public safety and mental health resources. Brimmer, who lived at 743 Solstice Ct., had four prior convictions for sexual offenses in Alameda County between 1995 and 2004, according to records from the Megan’s Law website.

As the court date approaches, community members are left grappling with the implications of this violent act, while officials emphasize the need for comprehensive mental health interventions. The situation remains fluid, with many awaiting further developments as the defense prepares to enter a plea.
