UPDATE: Sacramento has made significant strides in addressing its homelessness crisis, managing over 2,000 cases in just one week. The City’s Incident Management Team (IMT) reports a surge in activity, with vital actions taken from November 10-16, 2023.
During this period, the City received 544 calls to its 311 customer service line, resulting in the opening of 2,096 cases. This number reflects the complex nature of homelessness, where multiple cases can arise from a single call, as detailed by the Sacramento City Express. Impressively, the IMT closed 2,466 cases, signaling effective resolutions and compliance efforts.
The Department of Community Response has also reported that their outreach staff successfully enrolled 74 individuals into local shelter databases, connecting them with essential resources. In terms of housing, 17 people were placed in either the City’s Roseville Road campus or the Outreach and Engagement Center (OEC) within the same week, showcasing the direct impact of these efforts.
However, challenges remain. The capacity for housing is critically low, with currently zero Pallet homes and zero trailers available at the Roseville Road campus. The OEC has only two spaces available, while City-funded shelters average 13 openings. This shortage underscores the urgent need for increased resources to support vulnerable populations.
In an effort to combat the tangible effects of homelessness on the city, Sacramento’s teams have removed a staggering 50,140 pounds of trash during cleanup operations. The City is committed to transparency in its homelessness management, providing a data dashboard for the public to track the IMT’s weekly progress since September 2023, including outreach, compliance, and cleanup statistics.
