UPDATE: The Staten Island Bowling Hall of Fame celebrated a momentous occasion on September 24, 2023, at LiGreci’s Staaten, inducting nine new members into its prestigious Class of 2025 during the 26th annual ceremony. This significant event not only recognized exceptional talent but also reinforced the close-knit nature of Staten Island’s bowling community.
This year’s honorees include Superior Performance Award recipients: Naz Labetti, Michelle Dash, Rob Butler Jr., Lonnie Levy, Tommy DiNardo, Tim McAuliffe Jr., and Phil DeCessario. Additionally, Liz Philpott and Don Schewd received Meritorious Service Awards, while Joanne Soto was honored with the Gloria Simonson/Donna Zajac Memorial Award. Bob Johnson received the Ben McNevich Memorial Award, and Richie Hornreich was celebrated with a Lifetime Achievement award. The evening also recognized Frank Siller as the recipient of the Rab Wilkinson “Toast of the Town” Award.
Among the highlights, 13 local high school bowlers were named Ray Laursen High School All-Stars, showcasing the next generation of talent: Krista Tedone, Andrei Kovmir, Nicholas Nunez, Peter Flynn, Justin Arenas of St. Joseph by-the-Sea; Robert Werling and Zachary McGinley from Moore Catholic; Anthony Laverdi and Meagan Brady of Tottenville; Daniel Anello of Curtis; Tyler Boyle from New Dorp; Jacob Peterson of Port Richmond; Kiara Lombardi of Petrides; and Lindsey Souffrin from Notre Dame Academy.
Hall of Fame Director Ed Ellardi, in his inaugural year, emphasized the significance of this year’s class, stating, “They bring a little bit of everything to our organization. Each inductee deserves this honor, having contributed immensely to the sport.” His words resonated with attendees, underscoring the bonds formed through bowling that extend beyond the lanes.
“Everybody bowled for a very, very long time. It’s about what they’ve done for others — helping, teaching, running leagues,” Ellardi remarked, highlighting the community spirit that defined the evening.
Reflecting on her induction, Naz Labetti honored her late father, legendary coach Ray Laursen, saying, “This night helps to remember the impact my dad had… not just on me, but on the bowling community overall.” Her emotional tribute captured the essence of the event, emphasizing the legacy that continues through family and friendship.
Bowling veteran Tommy DiNardo shared how the sport has shaped his life, revealing, “Bowling has sculpted my life. It’s given me friends and taken me places I never thought I’d be.” His gratitude for the friendships forged in competition echoed the sentiments of many attendees.
“Bowling isn’t just about the scores — it’s about perseverance, discipline, and community,” remarked Phil DeCessario, encapsulating the core values that bind bowlers together.
