UPDATE: The holiday spirit has taken over San Francisco’s iconic cable cars! As of today, 12 cable cars have been transformed into festive displays, thanks to the hard work of dedicated volunteers known as the “cable car elves.” This annual decorating event took place on Sunday, and KTVU was on the scene to capture the festive atmosphere.
This year’s decorations are particularly special as they mark a significant expansion of the tradition that began 25 years ago. Originally, only one cable car was adorned for the holidays. Now, an enthusiastic team of volunteers, many of whom do not work for Muni or the SFMTA, has taken it upon themselves to decorate a dozen cars, both inside and out.
Val Lupiz, a longtime cable car gripman, oversees the decorating effort. He expressed his joy, stating,
“Just seeing the peoples’ eyes lit up and they pointed [at the cars], it was so much fun.”
The volunteers bring a wealth of creativity and spirit to the project, with notable participants including Joseph Amster, who dressed as the famed Emperor Norton during the decorating session.
The beautifully decorated cable cars will be running through the end of 2025 and into the beginning of 2026, bringing joy to locals and tourists alike. This annual display not only enhances the holiday experience but also strengthens community bonds among those who participate.
As word spreads about the cable cars’ holiday transformations, expect crowds to flock to the streets of San Francisco to catch a glimpse of this beloved tradition. With the festive season in full swing, the decorated cable cars are sure to be a highlight of the city’s holiday celebrations. Don’t miss out—share this heartwarming story with friends and family!
