Urgent: Multiple Deer Poached in Down East Maine, Reward Offered

UPDATE: Multiple incidents of deer poaching have been confirmed in Down East Maine, alarming local authorities and wildlife advocates. Since September, several deer have been ruthlessly killed and left to waste in the Cherryfield area, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

The department reported that a total of five deer have been poached, including a four-point buck in Harrington last month and a six-point buck in Deblois in early October. A doe was found killed in Township 18 MD BPP, and a fawn button buck was recently discovered dead in Cherryfield. Disturbingly, a large buck was shot and left with its antlers cut off in Deblois this month, raising serious concerns about illegal hunting practices.

“This is unacceptable,” the department stated. “There is no place in Maine for night hunting, exceeding your bag limit, deer baiting, or false registration.” The officials urged the public to help identify the poacher or poachers responsible for these heinous acts.

Authorities are offering a $1,000 reward for any information leading to a conviction. Residents are encouraged to reach out to Maine Operation Game Thief at 1-800-ALERT-US or submit anonymous tips at maineogt.org. Additional tips can also be directed to various public safety dispatch centers across Maine, including Augusta (1-800-452-4664), Bangor (1-800-432-7381), and Houlton (1-800-924-2261).

This urgent situation highlights the ongoing battle against wildlife crime in the state and the need for community vigilance. As poaching threatens deer populations and disrupts local ecosystems, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is calling for immediate action to protect these valuable resources.

Residents in the Cherryfield area are urged to remain alert and report any suspicious activities. The consequences of such illegal actions not only affect wildlife but also impact local hunting traditions and conservation efforts.
