Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Service Revives Train Travel to New Orleans

Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Rail Service has successfully resumed operations, providing a convenient travel option to New Orleans since its launch nearly three months ago. The service, which began on August 18, 2023, marks Amtrak’s return to the Gulf Coast after nearly two decades, following the disruptions caused by Hurricane Katrina.

On a recent day trip, FOX 10’s Lee Peck embarked on the journey from Mobile to experience the service firsthand. Accompanied by neighbors Marty and Chris Henken, Peck boarded the train early in the morning. As the train departed at 06:30, passengers quickly settled in and explored the café car, setting the tone for an enjoyable trip.

Among the travelers was Nancy Clark, a long-time viewer of FOX 10, who expressed her excitement about the experience. “I’ve always wanted to ride on a train. It’s a bucket list item!” Clark shared. She planned to visit popular destinations such as the Riverwalk and the French Market, highlighting the trip’s appeal to those seeking a lively day in the Big Easy.

The train made four scheduled stops in Mississippi before arriving in New Orleans shortly after 10:00. Upon reaching the city, passengers were greeted by the iconic New Orleans Superdome, signaling the start of their adventures. The day included a visit to lunch at the Streetcar Café, followed by a stop at the historic Hotel Monteleone, which was being decorated for the holiday season.

At the Carousel Bar within the hotel, Peck and his friends enjoyed afternoon cocktails. Other passengers, including Mellissa and Jay Fraiser, who boarded in Pascagoula, also shared their positive experiences. Celebrating their eighth wedding anniversary, the Fraisers were pleasantly surprised by the comfort of the train seating. “I was worried about the comfort, but I was impressed. It’s way more comfortable than a plane,” Mellissa remarked.

The ease of train travel has captured the interest of many, with travelers like Marty expressing enthusiasm for future trips. “Now that they’re back, I know for sure that we’ll take it again. It’s been fun,” he stated. Nancy Clark echoed this sentiment, noting that her trip was centered around the train experience, which exceeded her expectations.

As the popularity of Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Rail Service continues to grow, it presents a promising option for both day trips and extended stays in New Orleans. With the service now operational, the experience of traveling to the vibrant city is more accessible than ever.
