Congressman Aderholt Secures $2.5M for Wallace State Housing Project

Congressman Robert Aderholt of Alabama announced on January 23, 2026, that he has secured $2.5 million in federal funding for the Lions’ Village project at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville. This funding is part of the Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations bills recently passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. The project aims to create affordable housing and childcare facilities for student families, addressing significant barriers faced by many students.

Investment in Student Support

The funding will facilitate the construction of a tiny home village featuring micro-dwellings specifically designed for families of students. Additionally, an on-campus childcare facility will be established to support these families. Congressman Aderholt emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Wallace State plays a vital role in preparing Alabama’s workforce and expanding opportunity for families across our region.”

Aderholt further remarked, “By investing in affordable housing and childcare on campus, this project helps ensure that student parents have the support they need to complete their education and build a better future. I was proud to support this initiative and deliver federal resources that will have a lasting impact on students and the community.”

Dr. Vicki Karolewics, President of Wallace State Community College, expressed her gratitude for the funding, calling it a “game-changer” for the institution. She stated, “At Wallace State, our mission is to remove every possible barrier to student success, and for many of our students, the two greatest hurdles are affordable housing and accessible childcare.”

Broader Community Impact

Dr. Karolewics emphasized that the co-location of micro-homes and a state-of-the-art childcare facility creates a holistic support system. This system allows student parents to focus on their education without worrying about housing or childcare. “We are deeply grateful for this investment, which isn’t just building structures — it’s building a foundation for multi-generational success in our community,” she added.

According to Aderholt’s office, the Lions’ Village project is part of a broader effort to secure community-focused investments for Alabama’s 4th Congressional District. In total, more than $56 million has been allocated for various local projects, which aim to strengthen education, workforce development, and economic opportunities throughout the region. The FY26 appropriations package has successfully passed the House of Representatives and is currently awaiting approval from the U.S. Senate.

This funding marks a significant step towards improving the support systems for students in Alabama, illustrating the commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and community welfare.
