Maricopa Councilmember Calls for Public Feedback on Draft Plan

Maricopa City Councilmember AnnaMarie Knorr is urging residents to review the city’s draft Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) plan. The call for public engagement comes ahead of the plan’s adoption scheduled for May and June 2024 as part of the city’s annual budget process.

Transparency in Budget Planning

During a recent two-hour budget meeting, the City Council discussed the upcoming CIP plan. Councilmembers, however, were only shown a limited selection of projects that city staff highlighted, rather than the complete draft. Members were informed that a link to the full proposal would be shared after the meeting concluded.

The Capital Improvement Plan outlines millions of dollars allocated for both short- and long-term investments in infrastructure, public safety, and future growth in Maricopa. Knorr emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “This plan deserves thorough review not only by the Council but by the community whose tax dollars fund it.”

She expressed concern over the lack of advance access to the complete draft, noting that having such information beforehand would allow Council members to prepare questions and engage more effectively during discussions.

Key Proposals and Community Involvement

While the draft plan is not currently available online for public scrutiny, Knorr believes that both Council and public input are essential before any approval. She is prepared to share the draft with residents who wish to review it, encouraging them to reach out via phone or email for access.

Among the significant proposals included in the draft are:

  • A proposed shooting range for the police department aimed at enhancing officer training and safety.
  • Capital purchases needed to implement municipal emergency ambulance services pending state approval.
  • Transportation initiatives designed to improve road conditions and alleviate congestion, including upgrades to traffic signal timing.

Knorr pointed out that these investments are crucial for public safety and infrastructure development. However, she has raised questions regarding the prioritization of certain projects over others. “Responsible budgeting requires us to examine not just what is included, but also what isn’t, as well as the order and rationale behind those decisions,” she stated.

As part of her commitment to transparency, Knorr will submit her inquiries to the City Manager and welcomes questions or concerns from residents to include in her submission. “This is your city and your tax dollars. You deserve a voice in how they are allocated,” she affirmed.

The call for public review highlights the ongoing efforts by local officials to foster transparency and accountability in government spending, particularly in a city facing growth and development challenges.
