Residents of New Salem will gather at a Special Town Meeting on January 12, 2026, to vote on a critical article confirming the results of the May 5, 2025, town election. The election results are under scrutiny due to a failure to properly post notice in accordance with state law. Article 14 seeks to ratify and validate all votes cast during this election, addressing any “defects or omissions” in its calling.
The proposed approval of Article 14 would be supported by legislation introduced by state Representative Aaron Saunders, who emphasized that such issues can occur occasionally. “Things like this happen from time to time,” said Saunders, a Democrat from Belchertown. He noted that the absence of contested races or financial overrides in the May election simplifies the resolution process.
Financial Proposals for Highway Department
In addition to the election confirmation, the Special Town Meeting will also address several articles related to the New Salem Highway Department. Highway Superintendent Colin Killay has proposed eight articles aimed at stabilizing the department’s budget to ensure continued operations into the spring. “They’re all important,” Killay stated, explaining the need for the funding to navigate the end of the fiscal year.
Among the financial requests, Article 2 seeks $83.10 to cover a prior year’s bill for uniforms for the department’s three employees. Additionally, a total of $53,792 is being requested for various repairs and purchases. This includes $20,000 for repairs on a 2016 F-750 truck, $2,661 for repairs on a 2008 John Deere loader, and $11,000 for gravel maintenance on town roads.
Killay, who recently transitioned from a consulting role to the Highway Superintendent position, expressed confidence in the community’s support. Ahead of the town meeting, a meet and greet with Killay will take place at the New Salem Public Library starting at 17:30.
Additional Financial Transfers on the Warrant
Other significant articles on the warrant include proposals to transfer funds from free cash for various departmental needs. This includes $20,000 to the Legal General Expenses Account for legal consultations, $4,902 to cover property insurance bills with the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association, and $1,000 to hire an animal inspector.
