Walter Clarence Gilliam, affectionately known as “Piggy” and “Waldo,” passed away on August 31, 2023, marking the end of a life rich in accomplishments and community engagement. Born in Cairo, Illinois, he was the sixth child of Reverend Mayo and Culer Gilliam. Walter’s journey began in a close-knit family, where he demonstrated both academic and athletic prowess.
Gilliam graduated from Gary Roosevelt High School in 1962, where he made a name for himself as the pitcher for the school’s varsity baseball team, earning the title of Gary All-Star MVP. His passion for learning led him to study at several institutions, including Alabama A&M University, Chicago State University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Purdue Northwest.
His professional career was notable, having worked for organizations such as Ford Stamping and Inland Steel. Gilliam also served as a U.S. Criminal Investigating Lieutenant before retiring, showcasing his commitment to public service. He was a founding member of H & H Inc., and a proud veteran of the U.S. Army who served in Vietnam. His dedication to veterans’ affairs was evident through his life memberships at various organizations, including VFW Post #2151, Amvets Post #6, and American Legion Post #270.
Legacy and Community Impact
Gilliam was deeply involved in his community as an active member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Gary, Indiana. He had a wide range of interests that included billiards, bid-whist, pinochle, jazz, and gospel music. His creative side flourished through cooking, photography, and painting, reflecting his vibrant personality.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Dorothy Gilliam-Ford, and brother-in-law, Rudolph Rainge. He is survived by his son, Jeramine Duff, and daughter-in-law, Brittney, as well as his granddaughter, Angel Walker. His siblings, including Thelma Rainge, Arlessie McNeil, Oliver Gilliam (Mary Brown), and Marvin Gilliam (Cora), along with brother-in-law Linnel Ford, further extend his legacy, as do a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
