Embark Studios Enhances Matchmaking in Arc Raiders with Aggression Filters

Players of the popular game Arc Raiders are experiencing shifts in gameplay dynamics due to the recent introduction of “aggression-based” matchmaking. This development, confirmed by Embark Studios, aims to pair players based on their likelihood to engage in combat, enhancing the overall gaming experience.

During an interview with GamesBeat, Patrick Söderlund, CEO of Embark Studios, elaborated on this matchmaking system. “First, it’s skill-based, of course, then you have solos, duos, and trios,” he stated. “And then we also – since a week ago or so – introduced a system where we also matchmake based on how prone you are to PvP or PvE.” This means players are grouped according to their tendency to engage in player-versus-player (PvP) scenarios versus those who prefer a more exploration-based, player-versus-environment (PvE) approach.

The new system seeks to address player feedback regarding the balance of aggressiveness and timidity in gameplay. Players have noted fluctuations in the intensity of encounters, often finding themselves in unpredictable firefights. By implementing aggression-based matchmaking, players who are more inclined to provoke conflict will be matched with similar individuals, making for a more coherent gaming environment.

Söderlund acknowledged the challenges of this system, stating, “It’s not a full science.” He recognizes the existence of a complex middle ground among players, where defining aggressive behavior can be subjective. Nonetheless, he affirmed that “aggression-based matchmaking” is indeed a fitting term for this innovative approach.

Ironically, during Söderlund’s gameplay demonstration, an opposing player entered the conversation, pleading, “I’m friendly.” This interaction highlights the potential frustrations of being matched with aggressive players while attempting to explore the game’s expansive environments. The risk of constant conflict can diminish rewards, making the gaming experience less enjoyable for those who prefer strategic looting over combat.

The introduction of this matchmaking filter aims to provide a balance, allowing players to engage in conflict without being overwhelmed by opponents who may not share their gameplay style. This adjustment is particularly significant as Arc Raiders emerges from a successful launch period in 2025. Despite competing with major titles like Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, the game has established itself as one of the biggest releases of the year and shows promising growth into 2026.
