Florida Congressman Maxwell Frost was assaulted during a racially motivated incident at a party associated with the Sundance Film Festival late on January 19, 2024. The attack occurred at the High West Saloon in Park City, Utah, where Christian Young was arrested on charges including aggravated battery and simple assault.
According to the Park City Police, Young unlawfully entered the private party after being denied access due to not having an invitation. Reports indicate that he crashed through a side door of the venue, which was hosting an event for the talent agency CAA. Once inside, Young allegedly made disturbing comments about his racial identity before confronting Frost, who identifies as Afro-Latino.
Witness accounts reveal that Young called Frost a racial slur and threatened him, saying, “we are going to deport you and your kind,” before striking the congressman in the face. Security personnel quickly intervened to separate the individuals involved.
In a statement on social media, Frost confirmed the incident, stating, “Last night, I was assaulted by a man at Sundance Festival who told me that Trump was going to deport me before he punched me in the face. He was heard screaming racist remarks as he drunkenly ran off.” He expressed gratitude to the venue’s security and local law enforcement for their prompt response, adding, “I am okay. Thank you for all the well wishes. We are in scary times. Please stay safe and do not let these people silence you. Onwards.”
Film festival organizers issued a statement condemning the violence, emphasizing their commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all attendees. They noted, “We strongly condemn last night’s assault and abhor any form of violence, harassment, and hate speech. While the incident occurred at a non-Festival-affiliated event, such behavior is intolerable and against our values.”
In addition to the initial charges, Young faces further allegations of aggravated burglary and assaulting an elected official. A judge has ordered him to be held without bail, citing “convincing evidence” that he poses a flight risk and “would constitute a substantial danger” to the community.
This incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding safety and racial tensions in public spaces, particularly in high-profile events such as the Sundance Film Festival. The festival, renowned for its celebration of independent cinema, continues to advocate for diversity and inclusion among its participants and attendees.
