Giannina Braschi to Headline American Studies Association Convention

The American Studies Association (ASA) is set to gather nearly 2,000 scholars, writers, artists, and activists in San Juan, Puerto Rico, for its annual convention themed “Late-Stage American Empire?” from November 19 to November 22, 2025. This prominent event will feature a headline session with acclaimed Puerto Rican author and political philosopher Giannina Braschi, who is recognized for her significant contributions to literature and political discourse.

Giannina Braschi, a recipient of the ASA’s Angela Y. Davis Award, is known for her works that challenge cultural narratives and explore themes of identity and power. Her most recent publication, “PUTINOIKA,” released by Flowersong Press in 2024, delves into the complexities of contemporary politics and its impact on society. The U.S. Library of Congress has praised her writing as “cutting edge, influential, and even revolutionary.”

In addition to her literary achievements, Braschi has a unique background, having been a tennis champion and fashion model during her youth in San Juan. She writes in Spanish, Spanglish, and English, with notable works including the postcolonial classic “United States of Banana,” which critiques the collapse of the American Empire and advocates for Puerto Rican liberation.

Highlighting Cultural Perspectives

The ASA convention will take place at Humanidades Puerto Rico’s headquarters in Cuartel de Ballajá, nestled in the historic area of Old San Juan. The highlight session, scheduled for November 19 at 19:00, promises to be a captivating experience. Braschi will perform a dramatic reading of her work, followed by a conversation with esteemed scholars including Cristina Garrigos, President of the Spanish Association of American Studies, Nuria Morgado, Director of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language, Elidio La Torre Lagares from the University of Puerto Rico, and Carmen H. Rivera, also from the University of Puerto Rico.

This free, public program aims to broaden perspectives on contemporary American culture and the Puerto Rican archipelago. Attendees can gain insights into the intersections of literature, politics, and cultural identity, fostering a deeper understanding of the current socio-political landscape.
