Jimmy Kimmel Reflects on Turbulent Year After Critics Choice Win

Following his win for Best Talk Show at the Critics Choice Awards on January 4, 2026, comedian Jimmy Kimmel described the past year as a “near-death experience.” This reflection comes after a challenging period for his show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which faced a six-day suspension in September 2025 amid political backlash.

Kimmel’s suspension arose after comments he made regarding the death of political commentator Charlie Kirk. The remarks sparked outrage among right-wing commentators, including criticism from former President Donald Trump, who has been vocal about his discontent with Kimmel’s work.

Suspension and Public Response

In the winners’ room at the awards ceremony, Kimmel shared his thoughts on the tumultuous events, stating, “It was almost a near-death experience for me. Of course, not literally, but I did feel a little bit like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn watching their own funeral.” He expressed gratitude for the support he received, noting that the public’s reaction to his suspension underscored the importance of free speech, particularly for comedians. “To be here and to see that people reacted to it in not just a positive way, but in almost a desperate way, we’re like, ‘Oh boy, when they come after the comedians, this is when we draw the line,’” he remarked.

Kimmel’s comments in September, made following Kirk’s tragic shooting, had been intended to provoke thought. Upon returning to the air, he clarified, “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it.” His return to the show was marked by a dedication to addressing serious topics while also maintaining his comedic style.

Acknowledging Challenges and Moving Forward

During his acceptance speech at the Critics Choice Awards, Kimmel did not shy away from addressing Trump directly. “Thank you, Mr. President, for all the many ridiculous things you do each and every day,” he quipped, highlighting the ongoing dynamic between the late-night host and the former president. Kimmel acknowledged the contributions of his colleagues and the critical role they play in upholding free speech, stating, “Thanks to all the writers and actors and producers and union members who supported us.”

2025 was particularly difficult for Kimmel, as he also mourned the loss of his friend and band leader, Cleto Escobedo III, who passed away in November. In a heartfelt tribute, Kimmel described Escobedo as “the nicest, most humble, kind and always funny person,” illustrating the personal toll of that year.

As Kimmel prepares to return to his show, he expressed enthusiasm for engaging with current events and sharing his unique perspective with audiences. His journey through controversy and loss has not diminished his dedication to his craft, and he remains a prominent voice in the late-night landscape.
