The sequel to the horror film Five Nights At Freddy’s has debuted in theaters, with Matthew Lillard teasing the potential for a third installment. Directed by Emma Tammi and based on the popular video game franchise created by Scott Cawthon, Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 features a cast that includes Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, and Megan Fox. The film follows Mike Schmidt, a former security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, as he attempts to protect his sister Abby from the vengeful spirits of children murdered by the serial killer William Afton, a character portrayed by Lillard.
The first film set a box office record for Blumhouse, and while the sequel has not matched its predecessor’s opening weekend earnings, it has performed respectably. Initial projections indicate that Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 may gross around $56.5 million during its opening weekend, significantly lower than the first film’s $80 million debut. However, with a production budget of approximately $35 million, the sequel stands a good chance of turning a profit.
Lillard Discusses Future Films and Character Development
In a recent interview, Lillard expressed optimism about the future of the franchise. He stated, “Our hope is that we get to do three films.” He emphasized that the creation of a trilogy has always been part of the plan, although its realization depends heavily on the box office performance of the current film. Lillard’s character, William Afton, appears only in limited flashbacks and dream sequences in this installment, which he likened to the way iconic villains like Darth Vader and Voldemort are revealed in their respective series.
Despite the critical reviews being less than favorable, Lillard is hopeful for a potential third movie. The post-credits scene of the latest film hints at Afton’s return in a zombified animatronic form known as Springtrap, which could indicate a larger role for his character in future films. Lillard mentioned that the sequel would include a climactic showdown akin to “Harry Potter vs. Voldemort” or “Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader,” suggesting a deeper exploration of Afton’s storyline.
The film also leaves intriguing plot threads, particularly regarding Afton’s children. Vanessa, initially aligned with Mike, ends the film seemingly possessed by one of her father’s victims, while her brother Michael remains unaccounted for and may continue his father’s sinister legacy.
Box Office Success Impacts Sequel Plans
While the critical reception was lukewarm, the film’s strong box office performance could pave the way for a Five Nights At Freddy’s 3. Lillard noted, “For now, we’ve got a long way to go; we’ve got to get people into the theaters.”
As Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 continues its theatrical run, fans are left to wonder what direction the franchise will take next. The film is currently showing in cinemas, and its success could ultimately determine the fate of future sequels.
