NFL Ends Contract with Dazn, Impacting German Sports Coverage

The National Football League (NFL) has unexpectedly ended its pay-TV contract with the streaming service Dazn, significantly impacting sports coverage for subscribers in Germany. This decision terminates a partnership that was initially set to run until February 2028, affecting various exclusive content offerings.

The NFL’s decision to terminate the agreement early stems from disagreements regarding the duration of the contract. The league sought to extend a termination deadline that was due to expire at the end of February 2026. The NFL aimed to reassess the value of its broadcasting rights in the expanding German market. Dazn’s refusal to accommodate this extension prompted the league to formally announce the termination.

As a result, Dazn subscribers will see a considerable reduction in their regular subscription offerings. The loss includes exclusive Sunday evening games, prime-time night games, and the popular German-language conference call, known as the ENDZN. Additionally, the co-exclusive rights to the postseason games, including the Super Bowl, will no longer be available through Dazn.

Despite this setback, the NFL Game Pass, which allows fans to watch all games live, remains unaffected. Available through Dazn at an additional cost, the Game Pass operates under a separate global ten-year contract, providing fans with a continued option for accessing NFL content.

Germany is regarded as a crucial growth market for the NFL, prompting the league to negotiate more aggressively in the region. The termination of the contract opens the door for new broadcasting partnerships. Industry observers predict that RTL, which currently holds free-to-air broadcasting rights, may seek to acquire the now-available packages to enhance its paid streaming service, RTL+.

In the United States, the NFL has long embraced a strategy of distributing its broadcasting rights across multiple platforms, a trend that is now likely to take shape in Germany as well. For example, “Thursday Night Football” has been successfully sold to Amazon in the US, illustrating the league’s move towards diversifying its broadcasting arrangements.

As the situation evolves, the NFL’s decision to end its contract with Dazn marks a significant shift in the sports media landscape in Germany, with potential implications for fans and broadcasters alike. Observers will be watching closely to see how this development shapes the future of NFL broadcasting in the region.
