Sean Baker to Host Q&A at Long Beach Art Theatre This Weekend

Oscar-winning director Sean Baker will visit the Art Theatre of Long Beach this weekend for a special Q&A session. Baker, known for his work on the 2024 Best Picture winner, “Anora,” will engage with attendees following a screening of his latest project, “Left-Handed Girl,” directed by Tsou Shih-Ching. The event is scheduled for Saturday, November 22, 2024, at 13:55 local time.

The film “Left-Handed Girl” tells the poignant story of a single mother and her two daughters who relocate to Taipei. As they open a night market stall, each character faces the challenges of adapting to their new environment while striving to maintain family unity. The film has been selected as Taiwan’s official submission for the International Feature Film category at the upcoming Oscars, where it is anticipated to be among the top five finalists.

Baker and Shih-Ching share a long history of collaboration, dating back to their co-direction of the 2004 film “Take Out.” Shih-Ching has also produced several of Baker’s other acclaimed films, including “Starlet,” “Tangerine,” “The Florida Project,” and “Red Rocket.” With “Left-Handed Girl,” Shih-Ching makes her directorial debut, and the film will enjoy a limited theatrical run before becoming available on Netflix starting November 28, 2024.

This weekend’s screening at the Art Theatre will provide an opportunity for cinephiles to engage with Baker directly. Kirk Jordan, a member of the Art’s Board of Directors and treasurer, expressed enthusiasm for the event in an email on November 19, 2024, stating, “The Art Theatre Long Beach is thrilled to welcome Sean Baker. It’s a beautiful film.”

The Art Theatre is set to celebrate its 100-year anniversary with its annual “Red Carpet Awards Fundraiser” on March 10, 2024, further cementing its role as a cultural hub in Long Beach. Tickets for both the film screening and the Q&A session with Baker are available through the theatre’s official website, arttheatrelongbeach.org.

As Baker continues to make waves in the film industry, his visit promises to be an exciting occasion for those passionate about cinema.
