Young Artist Hosts Fundraiser to Honor Aunt’s Legacy

Elle Smith, an 11-year-old budding artist, is organizing a special fundraiser titled “Benefit for Bubbles” on March 22, 2025, in memory of her late aunt, Kim Keene. Kim, who passed away from breast cancer in September 2024, was a beloved figure known for her vibrant personality and artistic spirit. This event will support Paint Pink, a nonprofit organization founded by Kim after her own cancer diagnosis, aimed at providing financial assistance to individuals facing challenges related to their illness.

Kim Keene, a talented artist and former owner of the Starving Artist Cafe in Norfolk, dedicated her life to helping others. According to her sister, Kathy Keene, one of Kim’s final wishes was to continue supporting others through Paint Pink. “Painting was her outlet, and she wanted to help others going through the same thing through Paint Pink,” Kathy shared. The bond between Kim and Elle was particularly strong, as Kim often hosted paint parties for her niece, nurturing Elle’s artistic talents from a young age.

This year, Elle’s school assigned her a community service project, prompting her to propose an art show to raise funds for cancer support. “I wasn’t sure about the idea in the beginning,” Kathy admitted. “However, when I saw the art she painted during the snow days, I was amazed. She is talented like her aunt.”

With her mother’s encouragement, Elle developed a business plan for the art show and presented it to the Paint Pink board. The board responded positively, excited about the initiative.

Elle has meticulously planned various details for the event, including decorations such as balloons and ribbons, along with fun elements like a bubble maker and birthday cupcakes. The art show will feature between 50 and 100 pieces of Elle’s artwork, with all proceeds benefiting Paint Pink. Kathy expressed pride in her daughter’s drive, stating, “Elle really wants to raise lots of money to help, and when looking at her paintings, it feels like Kim is living on through them.”

Elle reflects on her inspiration, saying, “I always loved to paint but didn’t know I could actually do it. When I attended my aunt’s art shows, I learned that a hobby can help people. My aunt was such a great person and inspired me to be a better person. She showed me that even the small things can make a difference. My aunt would love this benefit show a million percent.”

The “Benefit for Bubbles” is set to take place at The Gallery at Paint Pink, located at 2200 Colonial Ave, #15, from 1 PM to 4 PM. Those wishing to contribute can visit the Paint Pink website for further information and donation options. This event not only honors Kim’s legacy but also empowers the next generation to make a meaningful difference in their community.
