William (Bill) Whiting, a beloved member of the Santa Cruz community, died on October 5, 2025, at the age of 77. His passing was due to complications related to Alzheimer’s disease, a condition he faced with courage since his diagnosis in 2019. Bill is remembered fondly by his family, including his wife, Kate, his sister, Maggie, and his niece, Stacie, along with her husband and children.
Born on August 9, 1948, in Pennsylvania, Bill moved to California several years ago and settled in Santa Cruz around 1993. Throughout his life, he was known for his dedication to helping others, particularly in his role as a Rehabilitation Counselor. He provided invaluable counseling and vocational services to individuals with disabilities, leaving a positive mark on many lives.
Bill’s journey with Alzheimer’s was challenging, but he was fortunate to have the support of a devoted caregiver, Lupe. Her assistance allowed him to remain at home longer than many might have anticipated. Sadly, after experiencing several falls, he transitioned to Westwind Memory Care, where he received compassionate care. His family expressed their gratitude for the staff, who treated him with kindness and respect.
Celebrating a Life Full of Adventure
Bill’s life was filled with cherished memories, especially his sailing adventures in the Caribbean. He often sailed with his long-time friend, Jim Diebold, and other fraternity brothers from Penn State. These trips were some of his fondest recollections, highlighting his love for the ocean and camaraderie.
He shared a beautiful home in Bonny Doon, California, with Kate, where they enjoyed life on several acres together, surrounded by family and their beloved dogs. Following his passing, Kate continues to reside at this home, a place rich with their shared memories.
Bill’s friends also played a vital role in his life, visiting him regularly at Westwind. Notable friends like Andy Pereira, Gene Stymiest, Dan Strom, and Dave Witteveen brought joy to his days. They created heartfelt videos during their visits, including a touching moment when Dan played “Happy Birthday” on the harmonica for Bill.
