David Michael Cotter Jr., aged 37, passed away on November 5, 2025, after a prolonged battle with mental health challenges. Born on February 29, 1988, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, he was the son of David Cotter Sr. and Anne Marie Bluhm. David’s life was marked by his dedication to service, family, and community.
After earning his GED, David enlisted in the United States Army National Guard. He served with commitment from October 12, 2005, to October 11, 2007, achieving the rank of PFC while stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. His military service earned him several medals and honors, reflecting his dedication to his country.
Following his service, David embarked on a career as a barge deckhand with Upper River Services. He was well-known for his love of fishing, video games, and bowling, as well as his unwavering support for the Minnesota Vikings. Friends and family remember him for his comforting hugs, infectious laughter, and genuine kindness.
David is survived by his four children: David Cotter III, Marianna Cotter, Nakoma Cotter, and Cayda Cotter. He is also survived by his mother, Anne Marie Bluhm; father, David Cotter Sr.; brother, Christopher Thull; sister, Cesley Chavez; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. His family emphasized that David was always there for them in times of need, showcasing the deep bond he had with his loved ones.
He was preceded in death by multiple family members, including his great grandparents Frances and Samuel Bluhm, his grandfather Fredrick Bluhm Sr., grandmother Theresa Bluhm, stepfather Robert Chavez, sister Mary Anne Bluhm, and uncles Thomas and Frederick Bluhm Jr.
A service honoring David Cotter Jr. will take place on November 29, 2025, at the Galilee Lutheran Church in Roseville, Minnesota, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Following the service, interment will occur at the Union Cemetery in Maplewood, Minnesota. The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, Minnesota, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
