Donald Dicklich, a respected community leader and dedicated public servant, passed away on October 27, 2025, following a prolonged battle with esophageal cancer. He was 74 years old and is remembered for his contributions to both his community and the various organizations he served throughout his life.
Born to Bogdan “Bob” Dicklich and Mildred Kelsey Dicklich, Don was raised in Hibbing, Minnesota. He attended local schools, graduating from Hibbing High School in 1971. During his time in high school, he was a proud member of the school’s hockey team, which achieved 3rd place in the state championship in 1970.
Education and Early Career
After high school, Don pursued higher education at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business. His commitment to education led him to further upgrade his qualifications, ultimately earning an MBA from the same university.
In June 1975, he married Mary Zanoni, with whom he raised two daughters, Gina Marie and Dawn Michele. Don began his professional career at U.S. Steel Corp., where he worked in various capacities. He started at the Mintac Mine and Plant and later contributed to the USS Great Lakes Fleet, overseeing the shipping of products across the Great Lakes.
Public Service and Community Engagement
Transitioning into healthcare, Don spent 14 years in healthcare administration at what is now known as Essentia Health. His leadership skills were further recognized when he took on the role of Administrative Manager and CFO at the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board, an economic development agency in Minnesota.
In an important move for his career, Don was appointed as the St. Louis County Auditor-Treasurer by the County Board. He was later elected by the public and served three consecutive terms, dedicating nearly 15 years to the role before retiring in January 2019. His tenure was marked by a commitment to transparency and community service.
Beyond his professional achievements, Don was an active member of his church, serving on several boards and holding positions such as President of the Men’s Club. He was also a long-standing member of the choir, demonstrating his dedication to both his faith and community.
Don is preceded in death by his grandparents, Rade and Milica Dicklich, and Riley and Emilie Kelsey, as well as his parents, Bogdan and Mildred. He is survived by his daughters, Gina Lund and Dawn Verdone, and siblings Ron (Samantha) Dicklich, Diana (Paul) Broste, and Cherilyn McEnery (friend Scott). He also leaves behind five nieces, a nephew, eight grandnieces and nephews, and a granddaughter, Kennady Lund, who was the apple of his eye.
Donald Dicklich’s legacy is one of service, dedication, and community spirit, leaving a profound impact on those who knew him and the many lives he touched throughout his lifetime.
