Northeast Iowa Agency Launches Fall Prevention Program for Seniors

The Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging (NEI3A) is launching a new initiative aimed at reducing fall risks among older adults. The program, titled Healthy Steps for Older Adults (HSOA), targets individuals aged 50 and older, providing essential education and resources to help mitigate the dangers associated with falls. Each year, approximately one in four individuals over the age of 65 experiences a fall, a statistic that underscores the importance of proactive measures to enhance mobility and maintain independence.

HSOA is an evidence-based program that combines fall risk screening with interactive education. Participants will gain practical insights on various topics, including:

– Selecting appropriate footwear
– Enhancing home safety
– Ensuring good nutrition for bone health
– Engaging in simple exercises to build strength and balance

Upon completion of the class, attendees will receive a comprehensive program handbook containing exercises and resources to support their ongoing health and independence.
