Pullman’s Indoor Pool Reopens as Schweitzer Wellbeing Center

The indoor pool in Pullman, Washington, will reopen on Monday as the Schweitzer Wellbeing Center. Previously known as the Pullman Aquatic and Fitness Center, the facility underwent a change in ownership when Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) acquired it late last month. The center, located at 500 NW Greyhound Way, was formerly owned by the Pullman School District and managed by the city.

The decision to purchase the aquatic center emerged from financial concerns regarding its maintenance. Edmund O. Schweitzer III, founder of SEL, and his wife, Beatriz Schweitzer, initiated the acquisition last year, committing to a combined investment of $5 million. According to a December announcement from the school district, this investment will ensure that the center remains accessible to the public.

Plans for the facility’s future are already underway. Kristin Gehring, operations manager for the SEL Family Center, indicated in an email that the property team is actively developing upgrades aimed at enhancing aesthetics, safety, and energy efficiency. “We’re excited about these changes and will share updates with the community soon,” Gehring stated.

In addition to structural improvements, SEL intends to expand the center’s hours and programming. Gehring confirmed that new hours are available on the center’s website at swcpullman.com. Although staff are still finalizing programming details, they look forward to announcing the full range of activities soon.

The aquatic center, which opened 25 years ago with a generous donation of $2.5 million from the Schweitzer family, is celebrating its milestone with a special offer. New monthly memberships will be available at a 25% discount during the first three months after joining. Starting Monday, day passes will also be offered for purchase.

The city of Pullman has ensured that no memberships extend beyond the end of 2025. Representatives from Pullman Parks & Recreation worked directly with patrons to resolve any outstanding memberships that would carry into the new year.

Community members are encouraged to stay informed about the center’s upgrades, events, and programming. Interested individuals can sign up for the center’s mailing list or follow its social media pages for the latest updates. For further inquiries, Pearce can be reached at [email protected].
