San Rafael Community Mourns Loss of Carolyn Mailliard Hacker

Carolyn Mailliard Hacker, a beloved member of the San Rafael community, passed away on November 21, 2025, at the age of 87 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Her death marks the end of a rich life dedicated to family, community service, and a passion for gardening.

A Life Rooted in Family and Education

Born in 1938 in San Francisco, Carolyn was the eldest daughter of J.W. Mailliard and Margaret Field. She was also the eldest granddaughter of Ward and Kate Mailliard. Her family’s deep roots in the Bay Area fostered a sense of belonging that Carolyn cherished throughout her life. The family spent early years traveling due to her father’s service in the United States Army, but they returned to San Francisco after World War II.

Education was a cornerstone of Carolyn’s early life. She attended KD Burke School, Katherine Branson Girls School, and later completed her studies at Connecticut College for Women. In 1963, she settled in San Rafael, where she spent more than six decades nurturing her community ties.

A Legacy of Service and Passion

Carolyn’s love for gardening was evident in her beautiful plants, earning her numerous awards at the Marin County Fair. Beyond her horticultural pursuits, she was an avid knitter and dedicated genealogist. She invested countless hours into researching her family’s history, ensuring that future generations would have a rich understanding of their roots.

Her commitment to education was exemplified by her volunteer work within the Miller Creek Elementary School District and the San Rafael City Schools District from 1972 to 1980. Carolyn believed in giving back to the community, and her efforts reflected a deep dedication to the values she held dear.

Carolyn is survived by her loving husband, Paul Hacker, her children Barbara (Greg) and Lyn (Don), her grandchildren Andrew (Katy), Chris, Emily (Mike), Amanda, and KevinJocelyn. She also leaves behind her sisters, Kathy and Margot, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life is planned for May 2026, coinciding with Carolyn’s birthday and Mother’s Day. In lieu of flowers, her family invites memorial contributions to be made to the San Rafael Public Library Foundation or the Marin Humane Society. Carolyn’s legacy of love and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew her.
