Community Events in Detroit Lakes: January 10-21 Activities

Residents of Detroit Lakes and the surrounding area have a variety of community events to look forward to from January 10 to January 21, 2024. The Detroit Lakes Tribune invites submissions for community calendar listings to be featured online and in print. Those interested should submit details at least a week in advance, including the event’s date, time, location, contact information, and admission costs, if applicable.

Upcoming Events: January 10-21

On Saturday, January 10, the Becker County DFL will host a Working Families Picnic at M-State in Detroit Lakes from 13:00 to 15:00. Attendees can enjoy chili and cornbread, with entertainment including a fortune teller, as the community gears up for the precinct caucuses on February 3. Also on the same day, the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center (DLCCC) will kick off its Winter Wonderland Fundraiser from 15:00 to 18:00. This event celebrates the Center’s 25th anniversary, featuring indoor winter activities and facility tours. Admission is free for DLCCC members or with the purchase of a day pass.

Later that evening, at 19:00, the Historic Holmes Theatre will launch its “Flight Notes” concert series with a performance by The Imaginaries, a folk-rock band from Oklahoma. This unique experience allows audience members to sit on stage and enjoy a curated selection of snacks and drinks. Tickets can be purchased at dlccc.org/holmes-theatre or at the Holmes Box Office.

Live music will also be featured at various local venues, including Rachael Ianiro at Al’s Bar and Grill from 19:30 to 22:30 and Rick Adams at the Detroit Lakes Holiday Inn from 20:00 to 23:00.

On Sunday, January 11, the VFW Auxiliary will host a breakfast fundraiser at VFW Post 1676 from 08:00 to noon. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, and eggs for a suggested donation of $9 per person. The Callaway Lions Club will also hold a breakfast at the Community Center in Callaway, welcoming donations.

The Lakes Area Chorale is set to start its 2026 season with the first rehearsal on January 11 from 13:00 to 15:00 at First Lutheran Church. This year’s theme is “Anthems and Icons,” with no auditions necessary for singers. Participants will have the chance to register and receive music at the rehearsal.

A jigsaw puzzle competition will take place at Bucks Mill Brewing in downtown Detroit Lakes at 14:00, with registration beginning at 13:30. Interested participants can sign up online or call for more information.

Mid-January Highlights

The week continues with engaging activities, including a trivia event at the DLCCC on January 12 at noon for just $1 per person. The American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) will hold a chapter meeting that evening at VFW Post 1676, where guest speaker Amy Stearns will share insights on Project 412.

On January 13, the DLCCC’s Engage group will present “Passport to Iceland,” an informative session about Iceland at 11:00. The cost is $4 for members and $6 for non-members.

The Tuesday Afternoon Book Club at the Detroit Lakes Public Library will host its monthly meeting on January 14, discussing “The Women” by Kristin Hannah from 15:00 to 16:00. Participants are encouraged to join, regardless of whether they’ve read the book.

Several recurring events will also take place, including the ULTRA Snowmobile Club meeting on January 15 at the Detroit Lakes American Legion and live music performances across local venues throughout the week.

As the month progresses, community members can participate in the Tossin’ for a Cure Cornhole Tournament on January 17 at the Park Rapids American Legion, supporting the Lakes Area Relay For Life. Registration opens at 10:15, with the tournament beginning at 11:15. The cost is $60 per team.

Also scheduled on January 17 is the Big Band Dessert Dance at the Historic Holmes Theatre from 19:00 to 21:00, featuring desserts and drinks available for purchase.
