Community Mourns the Loss of Thomas Charles Thomason, 77

Thomas Charles Thomason, a beloved member of the Redwood Valley community, passed away on December 24, 2024, at the age of 77 in his home. His family, including his wife’s friend Catherine Christiansen and her daughter Trinity Thurner, were present at the time of his passing, alongside his cherished pets, including his dog Tug and horses Chick and Sweda.

Born on June 6, 1947, in Providence, Rhode Island, Thomason was the son of Charles Thomason and Dorothy Traynor, both of whom have predeceased him. He dedicated part of his life to serving in the Special Forces as a weapons mechanic during the Vietnam War, where he formed lasting bonds with his fellow servicemen. Thomason was honorably discharged and received multiple commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Military Achievement Award.

In 2000, he married Barbara Jean Zilch-Thomason, who passed away on June 6, 2023. The couple relocated to Redwood Valley in 2016 from Healdsburg, California, where they were actively involved in various equestrian organizations, including the Russian River Riders, the Sonoma County Santa Rosa Driving & Riding Club, the Reno Sierra Riders, and the Sonoma County Trail Blazers.

After his military service, Thomason transitioned to a career as a Sales Manager in grocery distribution. His life took a turn following a serious car accident that left him severely injured. Subsequently, he became a well-known saddle maker in Healdsburg and also worked as a bus driver for the Healdsburg School System, where he was fondly remembered by the students who rode his bus.

Thomason’s legacy will be characterized by his skill in saddle making, his warm personality, and his generosity. Neighbors recall seeing him riding his tractor daily on his property, with the American Flag proudly displayed, symbolizing his patriotism. This flag also adorned his porch, marking his commitment to his country.

As a devout Christian, Thomason is survived by his sister, Caryl Thomason, who resides in the eastern United States. His passing leaves a significant void in the lives of those who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.

In honoring his memory, the community encourages the planting of living memorials or sending flowers as a tribute to Thomas Charles Thomason, a man whose life was filled with adventure and kindness. His impact on friends, family, and neighbors will resonate for years to come.
