Community Remembers Nance Maria Monaghan: A Life of Adventure

Nance Maria Monaghan, a beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, at The Mooring on Foreside, surrounded by her family and friends. A Celebration of Life was held on the same day, honoring her vibrant spirit and remarkable journey.

Born on June 8, 1954, in Bangor, Nance was the daughter of the late Dr. Stephen Monaghan and his wife, Luisa. She graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School in 1972 before pursuing a degree in Architectural History at Skidmore College. Her passion for architecture was evident during her time at Skidmore, where she contributed to the renovation of the Canfield Casino in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Nance’s professional life was diverse and engaging. One of her first roles was at the Children’s Museum of Maine, where she traveled across the state to stock the newly established Discovery Center. Her career continued to flourish when she joined F.O. Bailey in the Old Port, allowing her to deepen her extensive knowledge of antiques and architectural structures. Eventually, she obtained her real estate license, working with Ram Harnden and later at Gleichman Asset Management.

Driven by her curiosity, Nance acquired a Private Investigator’s license and partnered with Angle Investigations. Later, she established her own private investigation and consultation practice, showcasing her adventurous spirit and commitment to her work.

In her later years, Nance found joy in seasonal adventures. She spent winters in Park City, embracing the ski culture and her love for vintage fashion. Summers brought her back to Maine, where she relished fly-fishing, a passion that reflected her deep appreciation for the outdoors. Nance’s adventurous nature also led her to travel extensively, exploring regions across Europe, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Her second husband was Australian, and she cherished time spent in Sydney, escaping the harsh Maine winters.

Nance is survived by her sons, Alexander and Ian (Tiffany), along with their three children, Wyatt, Sunny, and Maren. She also leaves behind her five sisters—Stephanie, Patricia, Kimberly, Jane, and Elizabeth—brother Stephen, their spouses, and numerous close friends. Her family expressed gratitude to The Mooring, Chaplain Michael Lacy, and Kati Dee, RN at Beacon Hospice, for their compassionate support during her final days.

In lieu of flowers, Nance’s family encourages others to celebrate her life by taking a walk, collecting unique treasures along the way, enjoying music, and sharing a glass of wine with loved ones. This reflects Nance’s zest for life and her belief in the joy of simple pleasures.
