The Detroit Fire Department proudly welcomed 51 new Firefighter/EMTs during a graduation ceremony for Class 89, marking a significant milestone for the city’s emergency services. The event celebrated the graduates’ completion of rigorous training in essential firefighting and emergency medical services (EMS) skills, preparing them to serve the community effectively.
During the ceremony held on March 15, 2023, at Second Ebenezer Church, Chief Jamal Mickles commended the dedication of the newly graduated cadets. He stated, “These 51 cadets have risen to every challenge we set before them.” Chief Mickles expressed his confidence in their readiness to serve with “courage, skill, and compassion,” reflecting the high standards of the Detroit Fire Department, according to a report from the City of Detroit.
Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms highlighted the graduates’ commitment to public service. “These new trial firefighters carry forward a passion for community,” he remarked, noting that many of the graduates are following in the footsteps of family members who have previously served in the department. The graduates completed extensive training, including fire attack, search and rescue, and Rapid Intervention Rescue, equipping them to handle both fires and medical emergencies in Detroit.
The ceremony also featured remarks from Deputy Mayor Melia Howard, who addressed the graduates with an inspiring message. “The badge you wear is a promise to the Citizens of Detroit that you protect them with every ounce of your strength and every beat of your heart,” she affirmed, underscoring the importance of their new roles.
One of the standout stories from the graduation was that of Trial Firefighter Andre Vaughn. After facing an initial setback in his journey, Vaughn persevered, earning his EMT license elsewhere before returning to complete his training at the academy. He expressed his determination, stating, “I didn’t give up. I knew this is where I wanted to spend my career. I did the work, came back, and today I’m a Detroit firefighter. This moment means everything to me.”
The City of Detroit is currently accepting applications for future cadet classes, encouraging individuals interested in joining the ranks of the Fire Department to apply through its official website. This ongoing recruitment effort aims to maintain a strong and capable fire service committed to safeguarding the community.
