Detroit Lakes Commemorates 10th Annual Wreaths Across America Day

On December 20, 2023, community members gathered in Detroit Lakes to observe the 10th Annual Wreaths Across America Day. Despite frigid temperatures and strong winds, Tom and Pam Mortenson, along with dedicated volunteers, led the event at Veterans Memorial Park.

Originally scheduled for December 13, the local observance was postponed by one week. This change was necessary due to Pam Mortenson’s emergency surgery, as noted by her husband, Tom Mortenson, who has been instrumental in organizing the ceremony for several years.

Significance of the Ceremony

The ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance, recited by attendees who gathered to honor fallen service members. Tom Mortenson reflected on the significance of the Pledge, linking it to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence in 2026. He mentioned that special celebrations are being planned to commemorate this historic milestone.

Following the ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park, the group proceeded to lay wreaths at several locations, including Grand Army of the Republic Park, one of only three GAR parks remaining in the United States, as well as Lyle Crovisier Memorial Park, Oak Grove Cemetery, and Holy Rosary Cemetery. These sites are significant in honoring the contributions of veterans.

Wreaths Across America Mission

Wreaths Across America is a nonprofit organization established in 2007 to expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, originally started by Maine wreath maker Morrill Worcester in 1992. The organization aims to “remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach the next generation the value of freedom.”

This mission is carried out each year through coordinated wreath-laying ceremonies across the country every December. In Detroit Lakes, the event is sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Women’s Relief Corps and the Tom and Pam Mortenson Fund, reflecting the community’s commitment to honoring those who have served.

The observance of Wreaths Across America Day in Detroit Lakes serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans and the importance of community involvement in honoring their legacy.
