A historic Victorian villa in south London has undergone a remarkable transformation, blending its rich family legacy with modern design elements. The renovation, led by designer Scarlett Jones and her team at Sims Hilditch, aimed to preserve the home’s memories while creating a lively space for a new generation.
The villa, passed down through the wife’s family for decades, carries a wealth of personal history. The challenge for the designers was to honor this heritage while injecting fresh energy into the space. Jones recalls, “It was a deeply personal project,” as the team worked to breathe new life into the family heirloom.
In the entrance hallway, the designers opted for a serene palette, replacing bold wallpaper with soft white walls and woodwork in Oval Room Blue, a color that resonates throughout the home. New oak herringbone flooring adds warmth, while a vibrant stair runner provides a lively touch, setting the tone for the rest of the house.
The living area features a bespoke L-shaped sofa adorned with cushions, creating a cozy atmosphere. The elegant arched window, complete with original shutters, is dressed in simple cream linen, allowing the room’s decor to shine. The wallpaper, hand-painted by de Gournay, adds a touch of sophistication to the space.
A significant aspect of the renovation was the reconfiguration of the kitchen and snug area to create a modern informal dining space. Shaker-style cabinetry in warm gray provides a timeless backdrop, while a striking rhubarb-pink island injects personality into the design. “This really brought the room to life,” notes Jones, highlighting the importance of balancing aesthetics with functionality.
The dining area celebrates family heritage with a collection of cherished antiques alongside newly crafted pieces, including a hand-turned oak dining table. The existing joinery was revitalized with a fresh coat of dark teal paint, while elegant brass handles complement the vibrant red faux bamboo dining chairs.
Moving upstairs, the principal bedroom features a more muted palette of blues and buttery yellows. An oversized headboard made from embroidered fabric serves as a focal point, while curtains crafted from broad bands of cream and blue linen create a custom look. The design choice reflects the family’s desire for a serene yet stylish retreat.
The main bathroom exemplifies indulgence, featuring a sunshine-yellow slipper bath and a marble-topped vanity. This area, softened with upholstered pieces and a cozy rug, combines luxury and comfort. The playful mix of colors and textures continues throughout the home, ensuring that each space tells a story.
In the children’s rooms, practical solutions are married with playful designs. Fabric-covered shutters double as blackout blinds, providing a cheerful burst of color while maintaining functionality. A walk-in wardrobe gains character with painted doors edged in delicate scalloped wallpaper.
Jones emphasizes the project’s success lies in its layered approach. “Every room tells part of the family’s story,” she reflects, noting how the home honors its past while joyfully embracing the present. The B Corp certification process undertaken by Sims Hilditch further aligns the renovation with sustainable practices, ensuring that the family’s cherished antiques and existing pieces are woven into the fabric of the home’s design.
