Good Knights of Lorain County Delivers 5,000th Bed to Local Child

On November 8, 2023, Good Knights of Lorain County marked a significant milestone by delivering its 5,000th bed to a child in need. This achievement reflects five years of dedication to ensuring that no child in the local community has to sleep on the floor. The organization, which began as a grassroots initiative, has grown to become one of Ohio’s most impactful nonprofits.

From Vision to Reality

The journey of Good Knights of Lorain County started with Roger L. Dorsey, the founder and executive director who personally experienced the hardship of sleeping on the floor as a child. He established the organization in 2020, beginning with a small team of volunteers operating out of garages. Today, it has evolved into a thriving enterprise with an 8,100-square-foot headquarters and production facility located at 728 Leona Road in Elyria.

“Every bed we deliver is a promise kept — a promise that no child should go without the comfort, dignity, and rest that a good night’s sleep provides,” Dorsey stated. “Reaching 5,000 beds means 5,000 stories of hope — and we’re just getting started.”

Building Community and Partnerships

Over the years, Good Knights has formed vital partnerships with organizations such as Rotary International and the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. These collaborations have enabled the nonprofit to not only provide beds but also offer skill-building opportunities for both volunteers and incarcerated individuals. The initiative, known as Building a Better Tomorrow, allows participants to help construct the bed frames.

The new facility, completed earlier this year, has become a beacon of hope in the area. It is equipped to produce and distribute up to 2,000 beds annually, featuring multiple bed-building stations, volunteer training areas, and storage for mattresses and linens. This infrastructure supports the organization’s mission to expand its reach.

The delivery of the 5,000th bed signifies a new chapter for Good Knights, representing both reflection on past achievements and a renewed commitment to future goals. According to the organization, thousands of volunteers have dedicated over 50,000 hours to transforming lumber and linens into essential items for children, families, veterans, and seniors across Lorain and neighboring counties.

“This milestone belongs to every volunteer, donor, and partner who believed in our mission,” remarked Russ Hill, chairman of the Good Knights Board of Directors. “What started with one man’s story has become a community movement — a testimony that when people come together, incredible things happen.”

Looking ahead, Good Knights is set to expand its operations with plans to replicate its successful model in correctional facilities and community centers throughout Ohio. The organization invites the public to visit its new facility, volunteer, or sponsor a bed. Each complete twin bed, which includes a frame, mattress, pillow, and bedding, costs just $300, with every dollar directly supporting a child in need.
