On November 18, 2023, the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA) held its inaugural DAISY Award ceremony, honoring 33 nurses for their exceptional service and dedication to the community. The DAISY Award recognizes nurses who consistently deliver compassionate and skillful care, reflecting the hospital’s mission to provide outstanding patient support.
Celebrating Compassionate Care
During the ceremony, Interim GMHA Administrator Dr. Joleen Aguon praised the nurses for their unwavering commitment to their patients. “Today’s nominees were remembered because someone felt truly cared for. That is powerful,” Aguon stated. She emphasized that each nurse is integral to the hospital’s mission, acknowledging their compassion and resilience during challenging times.
Dr. Aguon highlighted the significant impact of small acts of kindness, noting that these gestures, although often unseen, hold immense value. The DAISY Award aims to foster a culture of gratitude within healthcare, enhancing the work environment and uplifting patient care.
Inaugural Honoree Recognized
Among the distinguished nurses, Danica Dianzon, a staff nurse in the intensive care unit, was named the first-ever DAISY Award honoree. Dianzon expressed her gratitude, stating, “I’m overwhelmed and grateful for everybody who helped me get this award. It takes the whole team.” Having joined GMH after graduating from the University of Guam in 2024, she has quickly become admired for her positive attitude and dedication.
Since her arrival, Dianzon has shown remarkable growth and has garnered respect from both her peers and superiors for her eagerness to tackle challenges and the kindness she extends to every patient.
The DAISY Award recognizes not only individual achievement but also the collective effort of the nursing staff, which spans various departments within GMH. The nominees included nurses from the intensive care unit, progressive care unit, radiology, special services, surgical unit, labor and delivery, and neonatal intensive care unit.
Governor Lou Leon Guerrero, a fellow nurse, addressed the nominees, acknowledging the unique challenges they face in high-stress environments. “Nursing is a calling that demands skill, compassion, and enormous heart,” Guerrero said. “Each of you embodies those qualities every day.”
Following her remarks, Lieutenant Governor Joshua Tenorio echoed the governor’s sentiment, describing the work of nurses as “so special.” He emphasized the importance of recognizing their contributions, especially in vulnerable moments for patients and families. “Today’s celebration is a reminder of just how vital you are to our hospital and to our island,” Tenorio stated.
The DAISY Award initiative is part of GMHA’s commitment to supporting and retaining its nursing workforce, which is essential to fulfilling the hospital’s patient care mission. The recognition of these 33 nurses stands as a testament to their dedication and the invaluable role they play within the healthcare system.
