A recent renovation at Raynham Hall, a Grade I listed property in England, showcases a striking kitchen that artfully combines two prominent color trends for 2026. The project, led by Francesca Froggatt, head kitchen designer at deVOL Kitchens, demonstrates how to successfully merge modern functionality with the historic charm of a stately home.
Raynham Hall has a rich history, having hosted kings and soldiers over the centuries. The challenge for the design team was to create a family-friendly kitchen while respecting the home’s architectural integrity. The previous kitchen space served as an occasional function room, necessitating a complete redesign to transform it into a warm and inviting area for everyday living.
Francesca Froggatt explained that the property’s status as a listed building imposed strict regulations on the renovation. “Every surface, including the intricate gilding and ornate carvings, had to remain untouched,” she noted. The team undertook careful restoration, preserving the original green wall paint while introducing complementary colors.
Bold Colors Harmonize with Historic Features
The choice of colors played a significant role in the redesign. The deep green walls, believed to be the original hue, provided a powerful backdrop for the cabinetry. The homeowners, Octavia and Tom, selected deVOL’s Refectory Red for the cabinets, a choice that added warmth without overshadowing the historic elements.
“The combination feels both bold and harmonious, bridging the old and the new,” Froggatt remarked. The rich colors create an intimate atmosphere, softening the room’s formality and inviting family interaction.
The design team faced additional challenges due to the building’s historic fabric. All cabinetry had to be designed without attaching anything to the original woodwork or stone. Furniture was strategically placed to complement the decorative features of the room, such as gilded carvings and expansive windows.
Creating a Functional and Inviting Space
With significant portions of the wall occupied by listed decorative features, the layout required thoughtful planning. A large freestanding breakfast cupboard was installed where full-height cabinetry was feasible, while the fridge and freezer were relocated to an adjoining pantry. This approach ensured a minimal and elegant aesthetic, allowing the historic details to shine.
“The Shaker cabinet design, painted in rich tones, introduces functionality and calm, providing a balance against the opulence of the surroundings,” Froggatt explained. The result is a kitchen that serves modern family life while respecting the character of Raynham Hall.
The design also incorporates various lighting solutions to enhance the room’s inviting atmosphere. Wall sconces were utilized to create a cozy ambiance, while large windows allow natural light to flood the space. The careful placement of furniture and the use of warm tones contribute to a welcoming environment, perfect for family gatherings and daily activities.
In summary, the kitchen at Raynham Hall exemplifies how bold colors can be harmonized within a historic context. Through thoughtful design choices, Francesca Froggatt and her team have created a space that feels both contemporary and steeped in history, proving that thoughtful renovations can breathe new life into even the most stately of homes.
