A stunning transformation has taken place in a Grade II-listed Victorian home in West London, where interior designer Peter Mikic has revitalized the space with a vibrant and playful color scheme. Tasked with refreshing the five-bedroom residence, Mikic was given considerable creative freedom by his client, who expressed a desire for a lively and colorful environment.
The home features a unique blend of historical architecture and contemporary design elements, with its original features—such as stone staircases, ornate cornices, and large sash windows—providing a rich backdrop. Mikic, known for his ability to merge historical charm with modern aesthetics, has effectively used color and form to enhance the home’s character.
Thoughtful Design Choices
Throughout the house, Mikic has skillfully incorporated bursts of color while maintaining a balanced atmosphere. In the hallway, white walls create a bright and airy feel, complemented by a Murano glass pendant light that adds a touch of elegance. The living room features a bespoke white sofa that harmonizes with expressive artwork, demonstrating Mikic’s philosophy that “white is quite a statement colour on its own.”
Mikic’s design approach emphasizes the importance of original features, which he believes contribute significantly to the home’s charm. “What was important for me was to keep as many of these details as possible because they give the house so much character,” he notes. His background in fashion informs his understanding of color and texture, which he believes evoke emotion and set the mood in each space.
Creating Inviting Spaces
The sitting room, characterized by an emerald green curved sofa, was among the first areas to be addressed due to its grandeur. The color palette was carefully curated, featuring greens, yellows, and reds that blend seamlessly. This inviting space has been designed to accommodate the client’s family, including three children, making it suitable for gatherings of all ages.
The kitchen and adjoining breakfast nook further emphasize functionality without sacrificing style. A striking orange leather banquette enhances the joyful atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for casual meals. Mikic explains that starting with a neutral base allows for flexibility in layering colors and textures, ensuring a cohesive and vibrant environment.
The dining room, with its smoky green textured wallpaper and a pink chandelier, creates an intimate setting for entertaining. Mikic’s attention to tactile elements is evident, as he incorporates various textures to engage the senses. “You want to be stimulated visually, but you also want to be able to feel different in each room,” he asserts.
In the private quarters, Mikic has designed each bedroom to embody its own unique mood. The master suite features deep, moody purple hues, promoting a cozy evening atmosphere. Meanwhile, the luxurious bathroom showcases a blend of marble finishes paired with brushed gold and brass fixtures, enhancing the overall feeling of sophistication.
