Juan Luis Tafolla Makes History as Kennett Square’s Youngest Council Member

Kennett Square has welcomed its youngest council member in history, as Juan Luis Tafolla took office at the age of 19 on January 5, 2026. Tafolla’s election marks a significant milestone for the borough, as he aims to implement change and address pressing community issues.

During the swearing-in ceremony, attended by family and friends, Tafolla expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his campaign. “It is an honor of a lifetime to be the youngest elected official in Kennett Square history,” he stated. The oath of office was administered by Mayor Matt Fetick, with Tafolla’s mother, Claudia Tafolla, holding the Bible as her son officially became a council member.

Born in New Castle, Delaware, Tafolla moved to Kennett Square at the age of two and graduated from Kennett High School in 2024. He is currently studying political science and criminal justice at West Chester University. His previous experience as a junior council member has fueled his ambition to foster connections between Kennett Square and its Mexican counterparts.

Priorities and Challenges Ahead

Tafolla’s immediate goals include addressing housing affordability, enhancing cooperation with neighboring municipalities, and promoting a transparent government. “We have a lot of luxury housing in our area. I would like to see a sign that says ‘affordable or mixed-price housing,’ not ‘luxury,’” he remarked, emphasizing the need for more diverse housing options.

One of the most pressing issues facing Kennett Square is the NVF site, where plans are underway to rezone the area from industrial to residential. The council recently voted 3-2 to allow for the construction of new homes, ensuring that 15% of the units will be designated for lower-income families. “A solution would be to halt tax increases and put money back into people’s pockets,” Tafolla suggested in response to the cost of living crisis affecting nearly 7,000 residents.

In addition to housing, Tafolla is focused on improving the borough’s aging infrastructure, which requires significant investment to repair potholes and water mains. He plans to advocate for consistent funding to ensure long-term sustainability.

A Message to Young Leaders

Tafolla’s historic election is not just a personal achievement but also an inspiring message to other young individuals aspiring to make a difference. “If I can do it, you can do it as well. Most importantly, be involved in your community,” he urged. His campaign garnered a record total of 1,071 votes, demonstrating the support he has within the community.

He shares this historic moment with Hilda Matos, who is also serving on the council, as they become the first two Hispanic Americans to hold seats simultaneously. Tafolla’s commitment to fostering relationships, both locally and internationally, is evident from his past experiences in Mexico, where he engaged with government officials to explore collaborative projects.

As Tafolla embarks on his council journey, he remains grateful for the support of his family and community. “This could not have been possible without any of you,” he concluded, reflecting on the collaborative effort that led to his election.

With a vision for a better Kennett Square, Tafolla is poised to make a significant impact in the years to come, embodying the belief that “change begins when someone decides to step forward.”
