Ohio State’s Curry, Klare, and Jackson Shine in 42-9 Victory

Ohio State University secured a commanding victory against Rutgers on October 7, 2023, with a final score of 42-9. Key players in this decisive win were defensive end Caden Curry, tight end Max Klare, and running back Bo Jackson, all of whom earned top honors for their outstanding performances.

Curry’s contributions were particularly notable, as he showcased his versatility on the field. He recorded a team-high six tackles, two tackles for loss, and two sacks, alongside a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. A pivotal moment came when Curry stripped Rutgers quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, recovering the fumble near the goal line. Despite the referees ruling him down at the 1-yard line, Curry’s aggressive play was instrumental in setting up Klare’s subsequent touchdown reception. So far this season, Curry has accumulated 49 tackles and leads the Buckeyes in both tackles for loss and sacks, along with a pass breakup and a punt block.

Klare’s Impact in the Passing Game

Klare not only made key contributions in the touchdown department but also led all Ohio State receivers with seven receptions for 105 yards. His performance was particularly critical given the absence of key teammates, including Carnell Tate, Jeremiah Smith, and Quincy Porter, who were sidelined due to injuries. Klare’s achievement of over 100 receiving yards marked just the sixth instance by an Ohio State tight end since 1960, the first being Jeff Heuerman‘s 116-yard game against Purdue in 2013. Since Tate’s injury, Klare has emerged as a reliable target, tallying 17 catches for 190 yards over the last few games, averaging nearly six receptions per game.

Jackson Powers the Rushing Attack

On the ground, Jackson was also impressive, achieving over 100 rushing yards for the fifth time this season and marking his third such performance in the last four games. In this matchup, the freshman carried the ball a season-high 19 times for 110 yards and scored two touchdowns. Jackson’s efforts propelled Ohio State’s rushing attack, which amassed 254 yards against one of the weakest run defenses in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). His fellow running backs, Isaiah West and James Peoples, also contributed significantly, with West gaining 48 yards on eight carries and Peoples sprinting for a 49-yard touchdown on three carries.

As the season progresses, Ohio State will continue to track player performances through a points system based on their recognition as stars of the game. Each player earning the First Star will receive three points, with the Second Star and Third Star contributing two and one point, respectively.

This victory not only highlights the individual talents of Curry, Klare, and Jackson but also emphasizes the depth and resilience of the Ohio State football program as they advance through the 2023 season.
