Oroville residents face potential changes to their city charter as the Oroville City Council prepares to address outdated language. Following the approval of just one of four proposed amendments during the November 2024 election, the council is considering new measures to streamline city operations and reduce costs.
During a recent meeting, council members discussed placing additional ballot measures on the agenda for the upcoming election on November 3, 2024. The proposed changes aim to save taxpayers approximately $65,000 annually by transferring treasurer responsibilities to city staff. Previous attempts to modify the charter included proposals to eliminate the treasurer position and revise the Parks Commission section, but these were rejected by voters.
Each new ballot measure is projected to cost about $30,000. The council will receive recommendations on specific changes that could be put before voters.
In addition to charter updates, the council is considering other initiatives. A proposal to contribute $5,000 to the Oroville Foundation of Flight for a fly-in event is on the table. Furthermore, the council plans to waive fees for Oroville museums during two upcoming events: the Chinese New Year on February 21 and Museum Weekend from February 28 to March 1. They will also discuss waiving special fees for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Oroville Post 1747 for a 5K special event.
The council’s agenda includes updates on California laws regarding e-scooters and e-bikes, as well as a report from the United States Army Corps of Engineers regarding Oroville’s levee.
The Oroville City Council convenes on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. in the Oroville City Council Chambers located at 1735 Montgomery St.. Closed sessions begin at 4:00 p.m..
