Remembering James R. Knapp: A Legacy of Family and Community

The family of James R. Knapp, affectionately known as Jim, has announced his passing at the age of 89 on January 7, 2025. His life, marked by profound contributions to Southern California’s real estate landscape and a deep commitment to family and community, will be celebrated by loved ones and colleagues alike.

Born in 1936 in San Bernardino, California, Jim’s roots in the Golden State were strong. He met his future wife, Sally Diane Dewar, while growing up in the area, and their enduring partnership began with their marriage in September 1958. Both attended Stanford University, where they laid the foundation for a life filled with shared values and dreams.

Upon moving to San Francisco, Jim pursued a law degree at Hastings College of Law, which launched a distinguished career. He initially practiced law with Kindel and Anderson in Santa Ana before joining friends to establish the Newport Beach firm Kalmbach, DeMarco, Knapp and Chillingworth. His shift from law to real estate development transformed the Southern California landscape, notably through his work with Dunn Properties and Pacific Enterprises.

In 1973, Jim founded Brookhollow, a company that became a family enterprise. Serving as Chairman, he took great pride in working alongside his sons and later his grandsons. He instilled principles of hard work and integrity in the next generation, ensuring that his values would carry on.

Jim’s professional journey was matched by his profound commitment to community service. He contributed his expertise to various organizations, including the boards of Hoag Hospital and Harbor Day School, and held a position with Bankers Life of Nebraska. As a Founding Member of both The Pacific Club and the Big Canyon Country Club, Jim’s influence extended far beyond his business endeavors.

His marriage of 68 years to Sally was characterized by shared adventures across the globe, yet family always remained paramount. Jim’s Christian faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him through challenges and enriching his relationships. He found joy in reading the Bible, listening to Christian leaders, and attending services at Mariners Church.

Jim’s intellectual sharpness and witty spirit made him a cherished companion, while his quiet generosity touched the lives of countless individuals. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sally, and a loving family that includes children Angi Evans (Pete), Greg Knapp (Vida), and Tommy Knapp (Bethany), along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy.

A service to honor Jim will take place at Mariners Church on December 15, 2025, at 10:30 AM. Following the service, a private burial will occur at Pacific View Memorial Park. The family finds solace in the belief that a good and faithful man has completed his journey and is now at peace.
