The Volcano Art Center (VAC) has launched its 26th Annual Wreath Exhibition, now open to the public. This popular holiday event features a diverse array of locally crafted wreaths, ornaments, and seasonal decorations, all created using various imaginative media and techniques. This year’s exhibition centers around the theme “Lei for the Season: A Celebration of Garlands and Lei-making Traditions,” encouraging artists to explore the cultural significance of lei in Hawaii.
In celebration of this theme, VAC has organized a series of cultural demonstrations throughout December. Every Friday from 11:00 to 13:00, local cultural practitioners will showcase their skills in lei, wreath, and ornament making on the front porch of the VAC Gallery, located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. These community events are free and open to everyone, promoting engagement with traditional practices and fostering a deeper understanding of Hawaii’s rich cultural heritage.
The press release emphasizes that the tradition of sharing lei is a deeply rooted practice in Hawaiian culture. It highlights the evolution of lei customs, from their ceremonial origins to their role in the hospitality sector, particularly with the rise of tourism. Today, lei remains a cherished symbol of friendship and celebration.
Participating artists in this year’s exhibition are encouraged to honor lei traditions through their unique creations. Some artists incorporate traditional techniques such as braiding and twisting into their wreath designs, while others draw inspiration from the vibrant colors and fragrances of native plants and lei flowers found in Hawaii.
Handmade wreaths are currently on display at both gallery locations—the VAC Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Additionally, visitors can view the exhibition online at www.volcanoartcenter.org, providing multiple avenues to appreciate the artistic expressions on display.
For more details about the exhibition or upcoming demonstrations, individuals can visit the Volcano Art Center’s website or contact the VAC Gallery at (808) 967-7565. This annual exhibition not only showcases artistic talent but also serves as a vibrant celebration of Hawaiian culture and community spirit.
