In a poignant farewell, Yosuke Aizawa showcased his last collection for White Mountaineering on September 27, 2023, during Paris Fashion Week. The designer, who has been a pivotal figure in the menswear scene since founding the brand in 2006, presented his collection titled “Post De Stijl” in a gritty concrete warehouse, capturing both the essence of his career and the influence he has had on the fashion industry.
Aizawa, 48, began his journey in fashion as an assistant to renowned designer Junya Watanabe at Comme des Garçons. His innovative approach to technical gear has paved the way for what is now known as gorpcore, blending high fashion with functional outdoor wear. Reflecting on his career, Aizawa expressed gratitude for the support he has received over the years. “I always dreamed of creating my own brand and showing in Paris, and I’ve achieved that goal,” he remarked backstage before the show. “The past 20 years have flown by. I’m so grateful to all the staff who have been involved with me up until now. It’s been a wonderful time.”
A Collection Inspired by Art
The collection drew inspiration from the Dutch art movement De Stijl, which emphasizes simplicity and abstraction. Aizawa’s interpretation featured a restrained palette of creamy greys, earthy browns, and vibrant pops of grape purple. This design philosophy was evident in the funnel-hooded outerwear and sleek tailored pants, showcasing Aizawa’s masterful pattern work and futuristic silhouettes.
While the future of White Mountaineering remains uncertain, Aizawa leaves the brand in a strong position. He noted that last season’s sales were the best in the company’s history. As he moves forward, Aizawa plans to engage in a variety of projects, including collaborations with Toyota for uniform designs and teaching at Tama Art University. “Fashion design is my core, so of course, I’ll continue doing that, and maybe I’ll come back here in a different form,” he added.
A Memorable Finale
The show concluded with a dramatic finale as 14 models paraded down the runway in jewel-toned crew-necks, accompanied by the powerful sound of Nina Simone singing “Feeling Good.” After taking a final lap around the runway to enthusiastic applause, Aizawa raised his arms in gratitude, opened a can of beer he had tucked away, and took a celebratory sip. “It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life, for me,” Simone’s voice echoed throughout the space, perfectly encapsulating the moment.
Aizawa’s departure marks the end of an era for White Mountaineering, but his impact on the fashion landscape will undoubtedly endure. As he transitions to new ventures, both fans and industry insiders will keenly watch what the future holds for this visionary designer.
